Terna Selects Terradepth for Marine Geophysical Survey Services in Ischia, Italy
Terradepth tested with Terna an AUVs Marine Geophysical Survey in Ischia, Italy
AUSTIN, Texas, January 12, 2024 - Terradepth, a leading provider of marine survey services and ocean data solutions, together with Terna, the operator of the Italian transmission grid, co-operated for a project aimed at testing the effectiveness of AUV technology in conducting marine geophysical surveys.
The demonstration was held off the protected harbor of Casamicciola Terme, in the island of Ischia (Naples, Italy). It included collecting high-resolution data that on real-case applications are used to provide accurate seabed interpretations, among the most valuable information to drive the positioning of electrical cable routes and landings throughout the several design phases. Gavia, the AUV employed for the purpose, was equipped with Multibeam Echo Sounder (MBES), Side Scan Sonar and HD Camera.
Terna, the Europe’s largest independent electricity transmission system operator, is director and enabler of the energy transition to create a new development model based on renewable sources and respect for the environment: sustainability, innovation and distinctive competence with the aim of providing the generations to come with a clean, accessible and emission-free energy future.
Terradepth provides cost-effective and environmentally friendly ocean data-as-a-service (ODaaS) solutions that reduces personnel and equipment risk while increasing data delivery speed and data accuracy compared to traditional survey services. The company’s vertically aligned ODaaS offering, provides end-to-end ocean data solutions, from data collection to data management and visualization. The team has proven expertise in using unmanned systems for high-resolution geophysical surveys in deep water; and uncrewed systems combined with a smaller operations team means a positive environmental impact, with a lower carbon footprint and increased mammal safety.
“We are thrilled to be chosen by Terna for such innovative initiative” said Joe Wolfel, CEO of Terradepth. “We look forward to supporting Terna in their energy and sustainability goals”.
